August Shopping Edit

Pay day is fast approaching for most of us who spend our days doing a Dolly Parton (get it? Workin’ 9 to 5! Ok, I’ll stop now) and I for one am fierce excited!  I’ve recently moved out of the family home and this has been my first full month of paying rent and bills (I think that might make me…a grown up! Agh!).  To top it off, it was a five week month with numerous weddings, birthdays and gigs to attend. Of course it’s great to spend your hard-earned cash on having fun with your nearest and dearest, but a gal’s gotta eat (and also, buy shoes).  Needless to say, I’m positively giddy at the thought of once again having actual NUMBERS looking back at me when I check my bank balance *happy dance*.

I’m not generally one for online shopping – nothing beats the tactility and indulgence of a day’s shopping trip, or nipping to my local shopping centre for the immediate rush of a payday treat. PLUS you always have an excuse then to go for lunch (in my book, it ain’t a successful day out unless you’ve a full belly and significant dent in the credit card).  That being said I’m partial to a bit of Internet window shopping and have already managed to allocate my monthly shopping budget to several lust-worthy bits and bobs… Feast your eyes below.

Missguided, Topshop, Diptique, Daniel Wellington

Check Dress// Missguided

Spotty Dress // Topshop

Mesh T-Shirt Dress // Missguided

Watch // Daniel Wellington

Candle // Diptique

Lip Bullet // Topshop

Lightning Bolt Shirt // Topshop

Peep-Toe Boots // Missguided

Long Line Duster Jacket // Missguided

Snakeskin Boots // Missguided

I only noticed once I’d created this little shopping edit , that all my picks are distinctly monochrome.  I find I’m being drawn more and more to pared-down, simple colour schemes and shapes (more evidence of that “growing up” maybe!)

The boots in particular have been sitting in my Missguided shopping basket for the last two weeks – obsessed!

And LOOK at that lightening bolt shirt! My inner Harry Potter nerd is heading straight to Topshop this weekend, and I think I’ll pick up that lip bullet while I’m at it – I’m still on the hunt for the perfect dark, red-tinted wine and this one looks very promising.

And again, that 90s style is popping up in these three dresses from Topshop and Missguided. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch the last of the Summer’s rays and pair these with bare legs and black boots (the HAIM sisters’ style has clearly crept into my subconscious!)

The Diptique candle and Daniel Wellington watch are two items that are on the “wishlist” more than anything else – but a gal can dream (or hint at the boyfriend..).

Well there ya have it, my August Shopping edit…or as I like to call it, ten easy ways to spend your paycheck in one day!  What items are you coveting this month?

Monday Mix and Match

I love these posts! They force to get up off my arse and make the most of my weekend – come hell or hangover!

Nails in Rimmel Lasting Finish - Disco Ball

What would a Saturday night be without a bit of sparkle, eh?  And this one was particularly special as it was a very good friend’s 30th birthday – we celebrated and boogied until we weren’t so sparkly anymore.  The shimmering effect of this Rimmel nail polish doesn’t come across too well in the photo, but believe me, it lives up to it’s name – shimmering, disco ball nails!!

I haven’t bought that much in the way of clothes these past two weeks (Payday, will you ever come?  I feel like you’re avoiding me at this stage), so I’ve been trying to “shop the wardrobe”…but as usual I couldn’t resist my weekend uniform of jeans!  Too comfortable, and easy to style, to resist really…

Outfit - striped top, turquoise necklace, pink lipstick

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet in Pink Pong

This is my ideal Sunday outfit, comfortable with a hint of Swedish cool (well…my mom thinks I’m cool), with milkmaid braids and flatform sandals.  This hairstyle is my absolute go-to at the moment.  It’s surprisingly easy to do, even with short-ish hair like mine, and when combined with a bright pink lip, it’s an easy way to make yourself look fresh and pulled together (when perhaps you feel anything but).  The Bourjois matte lip stain in “Pink Pong” is a recent purchase, made after reading rave reviews over on Bellinis and Blush.  You’ll know from my last post that I’m not afraid of a bright lip, and this one definitely ain’t for the faint of heart when it comes to colour on your pout – I LOVE it!

L. Mulligan Grocer in Stoneybatter, Dublin

On Sunday myself and himself ventured out to Stoneybatter in Dublin for some grub in L. Mulligan Grocer – and it was well worth the trip.  This little gem is fast becoming my favourite spot for a tasty Sunday lunch – hearty food with an artisan twist.  I went for the Dublin Bay scampi with a pea puree and chorizo aioli for starters (you had me at chorizo, mmmm), and a take on chicken Kiev with hazelnut crumb, beetroot slaw and corn puree for the star of the show.  I know, I know, anywhere that serves a puree of anything has the potential to be ridiculously pretentious, but this place is anything but, trust me!  A relaxed atmosphere, decorative vintage touches and really friendly staff makes this one of my top spots in Dublin.

I have to say, this post has been basically my ideal weekend in nutshell.  Fun, yet lazy with a couple of excuses to dress up – what’s your idea of a perfect weekend?

I Love Lipstick – My Top Five

To be honest, I could probably do a post on my top THIRTY lipsticks, but for the sake of brevity (and not boring you to tears), I’ve narrowed it down to my top five in my collection.  What’s even better is that none of these are particularly expensive, and all high street brands with one exception.

I mentioned in a previous post that it’s definitely all about the application to make the most of the colour payoff and longevity when it comes to more affordable lipsticks. Time allowing, I stick by the following tips:

  • Exfoliate lips regularly, even with a clean, wet toothbrush, and use a balm (I blogged about this Soap and Glory one recently. It’s excellent and it smells DELISH)
  • Pat concealer and a small bit of powder all over lips before application – I find this really helps to stop the colour bleeding (Lipstick really is the adult version of colouring in, isn’t it?)
  • Use a similar coulour lip liner pencil – all over the lip! It gives a great matte base for lipstick and makes the colour even stronger and last longer
  • Apply lipstick with a brush – it helps to get right into the corners of the mouth and the cupids bow, and again, useful for stopping colour bleed
  • And my favourite tip that I picked up recently? Powder in between layers of lipstick!  This little tidbit has been a godsend and really works to keep that colour poppin’ all night long

I’m always open to new tips as I wear lipstick every single day, so do let me know if you’ve any lipstick lifesavers!

And now, my favourites..

Kate Moss for Rimmel in 03 Nude and 01 Red

Kate Moss for Rimmel on 03 (Nude) and 01 (Red)

I’ve posted about Kate Moss for Rimmel Lipsticks before – I think I have about five in total from the range and these two are definitely my favourites. I think every gal should have a great nude and a great red in her lip wardrobe – and I’ve found both! The nude has a great warmth and sheen, instead of looking like you’ve just put foundation on your lips (pet peeve alert!). The red is beautiful true, blue-toned shade and is constantly raved about on t’internet – and rightly so. I would definitely recommend adding this one to your army of rouges. You will also see from the shape of these ones, and the ones to follow, that I practice what I preach – worn down to the nubs!

Topshop Lipstick in Brighton Rock and Rio Rio

Topshop Lips in “Brighton Rock” and “Rio Rio”

I LOVE everything in the Topshop Make-Up range and own several of the lipsticks (as well as nail polish, highlighters, eyeshadow and blush – I may have a problem).  These colours, like the rest of the range, are just plain fun to wear, but also have the quality to keep me purchasing again and again (and I’m a sucker for the snazzy packaging). The pink of “Brighton Rock” looks great with a graphic slick of eyeliner and a hint of blush on a night out. “Rio Rio” may actually be my top pick out of ALL my lipsticks, it’s super flattering orange-y red, and looks particularly great with a tan (which to be honest, I never have, so don’t worry that that’s a necessity!)

MAC Amplified Lipstick in Vegas Volt

Mac Lipstick in “Vegas Volt”

I first bought this lippy around 7 years ago when I was just beginning to experiment and be brave with make-up (before that it was tinted moisturiser and mascara at MOST), and I’ve bought it again and again ever since.  It’s quite an orange tinted coral, really moisturising and perfect for Summer.

That’s my pick of the bunch anyway, and I speak from years of experimentation and collecting. Lipstick is definitely my favourite “pick me up” treat and I don’t think a month goes by where I buy pick up one or two.

I’d love to hear what your favourite shades and brands are, do tell!

Outfit Post: Bohemian Black

Black Kimono, jeans and sandals

Some days all ya want is to wear black. All black eeeerthang. That, and a bit of superfluous fringing – which let’s face it, never hurt nobody, OR their outfit.

New Look Black Sandals

I decided to make some concessions to the sun with these New Look sandals (which look just enough like a mom/tourist sandal to make me endlessly happy) and sheer H&M kimono. The latter goes with everything, and is only slightly hazardous when trying to fasten your belt/walk past doors (I’ve only ripped two of the strings – calling it a win lads).

Necklace, Earrings, Rings

This necklace, as well as the rings and earrings, is from Penneys, who are KILLIN’ it with their jewellery selections this summer.  I’m getting a bit fed-up of gigantic “statement” necklaces at the moment and can see myself moving more and more towards delicate and layered chains – luckily, Penneys have loads to offer in both categories.  This one is three chains joined together (i.e.  leave time to untangle them when you want to wear it!!), two gold and one with a Turquoise style stone.  I can’t get enough of semi-precious stones, and my eye is always particularly drawn to anything with turquoise. Combined with my Alex and Ani bangles (The Path of Life and Om symbols – my two favourites), i think jewellery can lend a slightly bohemian look to an otherwise plain and simple outfit.

Monday Mix and Match

Oops, little bit late on this one! I knew putting the word Sunday in the title of my Mix and Match series would lead to it literally never getting done on a Sunday.  I find I’m actually more focused on blogging during the week, as I’m generally in a productive mood from being in work all day – is anyone else like this?  I’d happily do all my washing and cooking every night (domestic goddess over here), and then blog until midnight.  I definitely end up being reeeally lazy at the weekend, and only want to sleep until noon and eat takeaways/drink wine!  So basically here is a Monday round up of what I got up to/wore this week!

Longitude Music Festival

I haven’t been to a festival in years so decided to dip my toes back in the water with Longitude, which is a three day, no camping event in Marley Park in Dublin.  It also helped that my ultimate girl crushes and favourite band, Haim, were playing on the Saturday – and my god, they were worth every penny! If you follow me on Twitter/Instagram you’ll have seen my fan girl moments, but they were honestly so good, they deserved every bit of over the top swooning!  Their style is on…point!  And they have the talent to back it up too, playing their own instruments and bloody catchy tunes to boot.  They even played a cover of “XO” by Beyonce – I die!! Unsurprisingly, I also lost my voice a little due to over-zealous wailing and singing.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without the fashion to go along with it – and the girls (and even some of the guys – man in a tutu alert!) really went all out. Some great, some …not so great! Let’s just say, there was a lot o’ bum cheeks, but hey a festival is definitely the place to let loose!!  The weather was had been really changeable all week, which made for a a serious outfit conundrum, and judging by social media, I think every other gal had this problem too.  In the end, it was really cloudy and humid so I opted for this light, black slip dress from H&M (one of my favourite recent purchases), a dark denim jacket from Penneys and burgundy boots, also from Penneys, and of course, a few sparkly gems on my face – the perfect outfit for having a boogie and lounging on the grass. Pictured above is what I wore, along with my gal Lesley (who runs the faaaabulous beauty blog called Bellinis and Blush, check her out!) who looked an absolute babe in her amazing floral crown.

I had also bought these uh-mazing Doc Marten-style wellies in Penneys, as it had been raining all week (they are SPARKLY, how could I leave them behind?!), but as it happened, there was no need to wear them on the day. They were only €11 though, and fortunately (or unfortunately really) will probably come in very handy throughout the rest of the year!

Adventure to Howth, food, outfit On Sunday, I was very much in recovery mode (read: in bed until 1pm!).  But hunger is the great motivator and I eventually managed to drag myself into the shower, throw a bit of slap on and head out to one of my favourite spots in the world – Howth.  I grew up going for Sunday strolls here with my family, and it’s since become  my go to place for some fresh air and al fresco dining with himself.  If you’ve never eaten Beshoffs fish and chips on the pier, then it’s definitely one for the to-do list. So so good!! And of course, this has to be followed up with a gigantic ice-cream from Maud’s, for the ultimate Howth day out.  There is always a great atmosphere in this little fishing village, but it’s so peaceful at the same time, and if you’re feeling particularly enthusiastic, you can always hike the hill of Howth for some spectacular views out over Dublin Bay.

Being a leeetle bit tired, I wore whatever came out of the wardrobe first really. That’s how I ended up donning this floral H&M skirt that I’ve had since I was seventeen, six years – I am a hoarder of clothes! I lazily paired it with my ever faithful black separates and gold accessories – why mess with a classic?
